Interviewing children is an art and a skill that involves creating a safe and comfortable environment for them to share their innermost thoughts and feelings. This is particularly crucial in emotionally charged situations, such as family law cases, where children may feel conflicted and where the implications for their future can be significant. The questions must be carefully crafted to reflect each child's developmental stage and their family's unique circumstances.
When I interview your child, I prioritise understanding the issues and concerns relevant to their situation before our meeting. Acknowledging that parents often feel much at stake, I craft my questions thoughtfully to ensure that all perspectives are explored. Recording and reporting the children's views as accurately as possible is essential, often using direct quotes from their responses.
I have undergone extensive training with several internationally recognised specialists in children’s participation in family justice processes. This training includes listening to children's views, interviewing techniques, developing appropriate parenting plans, addressing parental alienation, and creating parallel parenting plans for high-conflict families. I am also a roster member of the BC
Hear the Child Society and am committed to ongoing education in this evolving field.
